Graduating at a time of unprecedented circumstances, the Interior Architecture Class of 2020 has adeptly navigated a shift towards the virtual realm. Facing the unique challenge of designing an exhibition without a physical space, the seniors have ingeniously adapted by creating a virtual site for their Senior Show.
The transformation of the RISD Museum Grand Gallery, renowned for housing European grand masters, into an exhibition showcasing the work of the Interior Architecture seniors is truly remarkable. Central to this display are the seniors’ full-scale Human Factors artifacts, which now inhabit the museum’s iconic portrait gallery. Additionally, ten classical paintings play host to ten new adaptive reuse projects presented through augmented reality. Titled "The New Normal," this exhibition explores the possibilities of space creation in a context where physical movement is restricted, prompting a reevaluation of architectural language under altered design conditions.
Significantly, this exhibition serves as an opportunity to come together in innovative ways and to commemorate the shared journey of the graduating class, irrespective of our physical locations.
To access the augmented reality exhibition:
- Prepare a spacious area, such as your living room, and launch the app.
- Use your mobile device's camera to scan the floor until a crosshair appears.
- Tap the screen once to project a portal onto the floor.
- As you move in real space, your actions will be mirrored in the augmented realm.
- Feel free to move around the portal and step through it to enter the gallery.
- For your safety, maintain awareness of your physical surroundings as you explore in augmented reality.
Upon entering the gallery, you will encounter ten large rotating objects representing our Human Factors projects at full scale. These objects levitate above framed depictions of their human interactions. Additionally, ten floating picture frames serve as portals similar to the one through which you entered. Adjacent tags offer detailed explanations of each project. Furthermore, observe particular paintings on the walls that exhibit subtle movement; artificial intelligence was utilized to analyze and replicate the original painting styles onto renditions of our projects.
We trust you will derive pleasure from this unique exhibition!
